Friday, May 5th, 2017MARKET REPORT Friday, May 5th, 2017 “SPECIAL ALL BEEF NEW CROP CALF/YEARLING FEEDER CATTLE SALE” SALE SUMMARY: Total Headcount: 1,986 MARKET REPORT Friday, May 5th, 2017 “SPECIAL ALL BEEF NEW CROP CALF/YEARLING FEEDER CATTLE SALE” SALE SUMMARY: Total Headcount: 1,986 Here this Friday, May 5th, we had another really nice run of feeder cattle (all Beef), selling 1,986 in total. Well folks, what a positive turn we have seen the past month in the cattle market; and so rightfully deserved to all the cattlemen and cattlewomen in this country. We really saw a significant jump this past week in both the fat cattle as well as the feeders. We saw fats climb into the mid $1.50’s, and a feeder market that was strong to begin the week, continue to grow in strength as the week progressed. The seats were full of buyers Friday, the weather was beautiful, and the market was on fire. On a market level, all weight classes were stronger, and quite stronger at that. On the steer end of things, the light cattle are light in volume, which is consistent with the time of year. The cattle weighing sub 500# accounted for 10% of the total steers sold for the day, the other 90% weighing 500-900#; with a few heavier cattle over the 900# mark. The light cattle were heavily sought after, especially considering the supply/demand with the number, reaching a top of 2.35$ on some light 300# calves. The trend didn’t stop there. The buyer demand for the heavier cattle (short yearling kind-yearlings) was no different than the light calf market. A light pot load of fancy black steers, weighing in at 795# brought $1.71. Naturally, the biggest percentage of the heavier cattle were steers, however all weight classes of heifers followed suit; with strength, compared to our prior beef sale, in all areas. The optimism and electricity in this cattle market makes our lives as cattlemen and cattlewomen alike feel a lot more like home. I’m not saying huge market swings in the upward direction are what makes our industry calming, however coming off a devastating year and a half market wise (up to December-ish 2016), optimism, strength, and positivity make it feel a lot more like our normal state in the bovine world we all so heavily depend and rely upon.
